A bizarre high-speed Houston police chase Thursday came to an end as the two occupants of the pursued car surrendered to officers moments before their vehicle burst into flames.
The chase, which lasted 10 to 15 minutes, unfolded along Highway 290, with traffic and news helicopter cameras capturing a silver Honda Accord trying to flee police on Atlanta's northwest side, KRIV-TV reports. Police have not released details about what prompted the chase.
During the chase, the Honda sustained damage to its front bumper and at least one tire was flat, according to KTRK. Finally, the car pulled over to the side of the side of the highway, and two people inside exited the vehicle and slowly walked backward to awaiting police.
As the suspects were moving away from the vehicle, flames and thick black smoke began shooting and billowing out from under the car's hood. Officers then performed a quick search to make sure no one was still inside the burning vehicle.
The incident shut down the highway's westbound lanes, and it's unclear what charges the car's occupants might be facing.
